The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said (translated):

When a judge (or scholar) judges, striving hard to reach the correct conclusion and then he is right (he arrives at the correct conclusion based on the Quran and Sunnah on the understanding of the Salaf), then he gets two rewards. And when he judges, striving hard to reach the correct conclusion and then he is wrong, then he gets one reward.”

Shaikh Bin Baz said1 (translated):

Everything which is known in the religion by the legislated, clear proof from the Qur’an and Sunnah or consensus of the Salaf2 of the Ummah, then there is no place for ijtihaad in this area. Rather, what is obligatory is having faith in it (whatever is known by the legislated, clear proof), working by it, and rejecting what opposes it by the consensus of the Muslims (who have hearts and minds unadulterated by shirk or bid’ah). There is no difference of opinion amongst the people of knowledge regarding this tremendous principle (which was just mentioned). Ijtihaad is only for the issues of differing in which there is no clear proof for it from the Book and the Sunnah. So whoever is correct, he has two rewards, and whoever errs, he has one reward when he is from the people of knowledge who are qualified for ijtihaad…”

2Those who came after the Prophet – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – and his Companions who followed (and continue to follow) them exactly in beliefs, speech and actions. Allah, The Most High, tells us:

And the first to embrace Islâm of the Muhâjirûn (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansâr (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhâjirûn) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allâh is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.
