They say: “If Allaah had willed, we would not have taken partners (in worship) with Him…”

“Those who took partners (in worship) with Allâh will say: “If Allâh had willed, we would not have taken partners (in worship) with Him, nor would our fathers, and we would not have forbidden anything (against His Will).” Likewise belied those who were before them, (they argued falsely with Allâh’s Messengers), till they tasted of Our Wrath.” (6:148)

Some of the points of benefit Imaam as-Sa’dee mentioned in his tafsir of this verse:

That the kufaar try to use Allaah’s qadar (pre-decree) as an argument to excuse their choosing to disbelieve and deny the Prophets. Imaam as-Sa’dee mentioned that their argument is refuted from a number of angles, from them:

– that if their argument was correct, then Allaah would not have allowed them to be punished – Allaah only punishes the one who deserves the punishment

– that Allaah, The Most High, gave everyone ability (qudrah) and desire (iraadah) so that they can fulfill the duties they have been commanded with. He hasn’t made obligatory upon anyone anything that they are unable to do. Nor has He prohibited anyone from anything that they are unable to leave off.

– that Allaah, The Most High, does not force anyone to do anything. Rather, He has made their actions a result of their choices. If they desire (shaa’a) to do something they do it, and if they desire to not do something, they do not do it.

– Everyone can tell the difference between having free choice in one’s actions and being forced

– those who use the argument of pre-decree as an excuse to disobey Allaah contradict themselves in that because they themselves would not accept this argument. If someone beat them, took their wealth, or did some other evil deed to them and then tried to use pre-decree as an argument to excuse their actions, they would not accept this from them and would become very angry

(end of points of benefit brought from Imaam as-Sa’dee’s tafsir)
