Boycotting the People of Innovation is Obligatory – Shaikh Uthaymeen

هجران أهل البدع

الهجران مصدر هجر وهو لغة: الترك.

والمراد بهجران أهل البدع: الابتعاد عنهم، وترك محبتهم، وموالاتهم، والسلام عليهم، وزيارتهم، وعيادتهم، ونحو ذلك.

وهجران أهل البدع واجب؛ لقوله تعالى: (لا تَجِدُ قَوْماً يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِيُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَه)(266). ولأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم هجر كعب بن مالك وصاحبيه حين تخلفوا عن غزوة تبوك.

لكن إن كان في مجالستهم مصلحة لتبيين الحق لهم وتحذيرهم من البدعة فلا بأس بذلك، وربما يكون ذلك مطلوباً؛ لقوله تعالى: (ادْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِوَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ)(267). وهذا قد يكون بالمجالسة، والمشافهة، وقد يكون بالمراسلة، والمكاتبة، ومن هجر أهل البدع: ترك النظر في كتبهم خوفاً من الفتنة بها، أو ترويجها بين الناس، فالابتعاد عن مواطن الضلال واجب لقوله صلى الله عليه وسلم في الدجال: “من سمع به فلينأ عنه، فو الله إن الرجل ليأتيه وهو يحسب أنه مؤمن فيتبعه مما يبعث به من الشبهات“. رواه أبو داود(268). قال الألباني: وإسناده صحيح.

لكن إن كان الغرض من النظر في كتبهم معرفة بدعتهم للرد عليها فلا بأس بذلك لمن كان عنده من العقيدة الصحيحة ما يتحصن به وكان قادراً على الرد عليهم، بل ربما كان واجباً؛ لأن رد البدعة واجب، وما لا يتم الواجب إلا به فهو واجب.

Boycotting the People of Innovation

 

الهِجْرَانُ al-Hijraan is the masdar (verbal noun) for هَجَرَ (to abandon, keep away from).  In the language it (al-Hijraan) means التَّرْكُ (leaving).

 

What is intended by boycotting the People of Innovation is: distancing yourselves from them, not having love for them, not having allegiance to them, not giving them salaam, not visiting them, etc.

 

Boycotting the People of Innovation is obligatory due to the saying of Allah, The Most High (translated):

 

You won’t find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day making friends with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger” (58:22)

 

And the Prophet – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam boycotted Ka’b bin Malik and his two companions (for a brief time) when they remained behind from the battle of Tabouk (though they were Noble Companions, not upon innovation, and Allah accepted their repentance)

 

However, if there is a benefit in sitting with them – in that you clarify the truth to them and warn them from innovation – then there is no problem with that.

 

Perhaps that is required (clarifying the truth to them and warning them from bid’ah) due to the saying of Allah, The Most High (translated):

 

Call to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and good admonition and debate with them with that which is better.” (16:125)

 

This (da’wah) may be (in the form of) gatherings and speeches, or (in the form of) correspondence and writing.1

 

From boycotting the People of Innovation is: not looking into their books for fear of fitnah, and not circulating them among the people.

 

Staying away from the places of misguidance is obligatory due to his statement – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – regarding the Dajjaal:

 

Whoever hears of him, let him stay far away from him, for by Allah, indeed a man will go to him considering that he himself is a Believer, but will then follow him because of what he will bring of doubts” Recorded by Abu Dawood and Shaikh Albaanee said that its chain of narrators was saheeh

 

However, if the goal in looking through their books is to refute their innovation, then there is no problem with that for the one who has the correct aqeedah to protect himself and is able to refute them. Rather it may be obligatory (to do so).

 

Because refuting innovation is obligatory and whatever is needed to complete the obligation is itself  obligatory.

1 Shaikh Ahmad an-Najmee was asked: “O Noble Shaykh, a person claims that he is Salafi, but he keeps company with the hizbis, and he was advised concerning this and responded, ‘Indeed, I am doing so for their advisement and guidance.’ So how do we judge this person?”

Explanation of “Don’t boycott more than three days”

The Question:

There comes in the hadeeth from the Messenger of Allah – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – that he said: “Let not one one of you boycott his brother for more than three days…”   What is the ruling of boycotting the people of innovation after advising them?

The Answer (from Shaikh Saalih Fawzaan):

Not boycotting his brother for more than three days – this is with regards the affairs of the dunya. When there is between you and him a dispute in the affairs of the dunya.  So in that case it is not permissible for you to boycott him, but if you must boycott him, then the boycott can only be for three days.  After that, you don’t continue to boycott him…As for when boycotting is due to matters of the deen (religion), then in this case he boycotts until he (the one boycotted) repents to Allah – Azza wa Jall.  He boycotts him until he repents to Allah – whether he (the boycotted one) is an innovator or not – he is boycotted until he repents to Allah.  The Prophet – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – boycotted some of the Sahabah who had stayed behind from the Battle of Tabook.  He boycotted them for more than 40 days.  He boycotted them until they repented to Allah – Azza wa Jall – and their tawbah (repentance) was sent down from Allah – Azza wa Jall.

The Living Scholar Saalih Fawzaan

A brief biography of the Shaikh, the Allaamah, Saalih  bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan

His lineage:

He is the Noble Shaikh, the Doctor: Saalih bin Fawzaan bin Abdullah, from the people of ash Shamaasiyyah and al Wadaa’een, from the tribe of ad Dawaasir

His upbringing and studies:

He was born in the year 1354 Hijree (calendar) and his father died when he was young, so he was raised by his family.  He learned the Noble Qur’an, reading, and writing from the Imam of the Masjid in his area who was a skillful reciter and the Noble Shaikh: Hamood bin Sulaymaan at Tilaal – who was later appointed judge in the town Dariyah in the area of Qaseem.

Then he joined the government school when it opened in Shamaasiyyah in the year 1369 H. He completed his beginning studies at Faisaliyyah School in Buraidah in 1371H and he was appointed as an elementary school teacher.  Then he joined the educational institute in Buraidah when it opened in 1373H and graduated from it in 1377H.  Then he joined the School of Sharee’aah (Kuliyyah – school which is part of a larger university, ex: School of Medicine, School of Law, School of Business (etc) which are all part of a larger university) in Riyadh and graduated from it in 1381.  He later obtained a Master’s and then a Doctorate degree specializing in fiqh from this School.

His jobs

After his graduation from the School of Sharee’ah, he was appointed teacher in the educational institute in Riyadh.  Then he was  transferred to teach in the School of Sharee’ah. Then he was transferred to teach in Graduate Studies in the School of Fundamentals of the Religion.  Then (he was transferred) to the Higher Institute of the Judiciary.  Then he was appointed Principal of the Higher Institute of the Judiciary.  Then he went back to teaching in it after his time as principal ended.  Then he was transferred to being a member of the Permanent Committee for Fataawaa and Scholarly Research and he hasn’t stopped having that job.

His other work

He is a noble scholar from the Major Ulama, a member of the Fiqh Council in Noble Makkah (part of ar-Raabitah), a member of the Supervisory Committee over the Du’aat (callers) during Hajj, along with his work in the Permanent Committee for Fataawaa and Scholarly Research. And he is Imaam, Khateeb (lecturer), and Teacher at the Masjid of the Prince Mut’ib bin ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Aal Sa’ood in Malaz. He shares in answering questions on the radio program “Noor ‘alaa al Darb”. He also regularly contributes to knowledge-based publications at the Council for Scholarly Research, Studies, Treatises, and Fataawaa – some of which are collected and published. He also supervises many of the knowledge-based treatises (written by students) in the Masters (degree) and Doctorate programs. Numerous students of knowledge study directly from him, continually attending his sittings and Islamic lessons.

The Noble Scholar studied at the hands of numerous lofty Scholars, the most well-known of them being: the Honorable Scholar ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Bin Baaz, the Honorable Scholar Abdullah bin Humaid – he would attend his lessons in the Masjid of Buraidah, the Honorable Scholar Muhammad al Ameen ash-Shinqeetee, the Honorable Scholar ‘Abdur-Razzaaq ‘Afeefee, the Honorable Scholar Saalih bin ‘Abdur-Rahman as-Sukaytee, the Honorable Scholar Saalih bin Ibraheem al- Bulayhee, the Honorable Scholar Muhammad bin Subayyal, the Honorable Scholar ‘Abdullah bin Saalih al-Khulayfee, the Honorable Scholar Ibraheem bin ‘Ubayd al-‘Abd al-Muhsin, and the Honorable Scholar Saalih al-‘Alee an-Naasir. And he studied from other than them…
