The Importance of Saying: “O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm on your religion”

Anas bin Malik narrated:

 

كانَ رسولُ اللَّهِ صلَّى اللَّهُ علَيهِ وسلَّمَ يُكْثِرُ

أن يقولَ : يا مُقلِّبَ القلوبِ ثبِّت قَلبي على دينِكَ ، فقلتُ : يا

رسولَ اللَّهِ ، آمنَّا بِكَ وبما جئتَ بِهِ فَهَل

تخافُ علَينا ؟ قالَ : نعَم ، إنَّ القُلوبَ

بينَ إصبُعَيْنِ مِن أصابعِ اللَّهِ يقلِّبُها كيفَ شاءَ

The Messenger of Allaah -sallalahu alayhe wa sallam – used to say a lot:

يا مُقلِّبَ القُلُوْبِ

ثَبِّت قَلْبِي عَلَى دِيْنِكَ

 

 

“O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon your religion”

So I (Anas) said: O Messenger of Allaah, we have believed in you and believed in everything you have been sent with, so are you afraid for us? He said: “Yes.  Indeed the hearts are between two fingers from the fingers of Allaah – He turns them however He wills”

 

Shaikh Albanee declared this hadeeth to be Saheeh in Saheeh at Tirmidhee (2140)

Question: The Prophet – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – used to say: Allahumma Muqallibal-quloob thabbit qalbee ‘alaa deenik (O Allaah, The Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm on your religion)1. And he said to ‘Aa’ishah (radiallahu anhaa): Indeed the hearts are between the two fingers of The Most Merciful2. What is the correct way to understand this hadeeth?

 

 

 

 

A (Shaikh Bin Baz): The hadeeth is clear. He – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – said:

 

إن القلوب بين أصبعين من أصابع الرحمن يقلبها كيف يشاء

Indeed the hearts are between two fingers from the fingers of The Most Merciful – He turns them however He wills”3

The meaning is that Allaah – Lofty and Exalted is He – He is the One in Whose Hand is the giving of firmness in (all) the affairs. So the Believer asks his Lord to keep him firm upon faith and keep him firm upon the truth. The hearts turn and they are between two fingers from the fingers of The Most Merciful – this is according to what is befitting to Allaah. It is established that Allaah has fingers in a manner that is befitting to Allaah4

And that Allaah – Lofty and Exalted is He – in His Hand is the ability to change the affairs and turn the hearts however He wills. He turns the heart of this one, so he apostates from his deen5, He turns the heart of this one and he becomes Muslim, and He turns the heart of this one and he falls into sin.

So the hearts are in the hand of Allaah – Lofty and Exalted is He – He is the One Who changes them however He wills – He is The Most High and Free from all deficiencies and defects. The Believer asks his Lord (by saying):

اللَهُمَّ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِيْنِكَ

‘O Allaah, keep my heart firm upon your religion’

(and by saying):

اللَهُمَّ يَا مُقَلِّبَ القُلُوْبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِيْنِكَ

‘O Allaah, O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon your religion’

(and by saying):

اللَهُمَّ يَا مُصَرِّفَ القُلُوْبِ صَرِّفْ قَلْبِي عَلَى طَاعَتِكَ

O Allaah, O Turner of the hearts, turn my heart to your obedience”6

(The Believer) asks his Lord for firmness.

And Allaah – Exalted and Lofty is He – is described as having fingers, and He has a hand – Exalted and Lofty is He – in a manner that is befitting to Him – He is The Most High and Free from all deficiencies and defects.

He does not resemble the things He has created – not in the hand, nor the fingers, nor in speech, nor in being pleased, nor in being angry, nor in other than that just as He – Who is The Most High and Free from all deficiencies and defects – said (translated):

There is nothing like Him, and He is The All-Hearing, The All-Seeing” (42:11)

 

and He, The Most High, said (translated):

 

To Allaah belongs the most beautiful Names, so call upon Him by them.” (7:180)

Don’t rely upon someone else making dua for you

بأنّ جاء غير واحد إلا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم

فجاء ذلك الأعمى وقال يا رسول الله قد شق علي ذهاب بصري فادع الله لي

وما أنكر عليه النبي صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم

والنبي صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم دعا لغير واحد

فلا أعلم مانعا لكن لا ينبغي للشخص أن يعتقد على دعاء القرين

فإن الله عز وجل يقول في كتابه الكريم

 

وَقَالَ رَبُّڪُمُ ٱدۡعُونِىٓ أَسۡتَجِبۡ لَكُمۡۚ

ويقول

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ‌ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعۡوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ‌ۖ فَلۡيَسۡتَجِيبُواْ لِى وَلۡيُؤۡمِنُواْ بِى لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡشُدُونَ

 

Question: Is there anything wrong with asking a Muslim to make dua for you?

 

Answer (by Shaikh Muqbil): I don’t know of anything to prevent this.  Because people came to the Messenger of Allah – sallallahu alayhe wa alaa aalihi wa sallam (while he was alive and asked him to make dua for them).  And the blind man came to him and said, O Messenger of Allah, the loss of my eyesight has become very difficult for me, so make dua to Allah for me.  And the Prophet – sallallahu alayhe wa alaa aalihi wa sallam – did not refuse to do that for him.

 

So I do not know of anything to prevent this.  However, it is not befitting for someone to rely upon the dua of his companion, for indeed Allaah (God, The Creator) – Lofty and Exalted is He – says in His Noble Book:

 

‘And your Lord has said: “Call upon Me (Alone), and I will answer you” (40:60)

 

and And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.”1 (2:186)…..

A Collection of Guidelines on What a Person Can Do to Protect Himself From Magic
Compiled by Shaykh ‘Alee bin Ghazi at-Tawayjjari
From the book ‘Tabseer al-Bashr bi-Tahreem as-Sihar’

The following is a summary of a collection of rulings and benefits:

A- Magic is Haraam and it is not allowed to perform it, nor is it allowed to learn it or teach it.  It is not permissible to go to magicians and the like.

B- The disbelief of magicians, the danger of believing in them and clarification of the severity of its sin.

C – Having knowledge of the Tafseer of Allaah’s saying:

<< They followed what the Shayateen (devils) gave out falsely of magic in the lifetime of Sulayman>>
Ayaah 102 from Sooratul Baqarah, the reasons for its revelation and the strongest opinion regarding it.

D – Having knowledge of the Tafseer of the story of Musa with Pharaoh and the benefits it contains.  Seeking cure and treatment by reciting those Ayaat  upon the one who has had magic done to them, such that he will be cured by the permission of Allaah.

E – Magic is a real and tangible entity.  That is why it is necessary for the Muslim to fortify himself against it by following what is mentioned in the Sharia’.

 

As a fortification against it:

1- Implementing Tawheed and sincerity for Allaah Ta’ala.

2- Tawaakul (trusting) in Allaah and relying upon Him, entrusting the matter to Him.
Allaah -Ta’ala- said:
<< And whosoever puts his trust in Allaah, then He will suffice him>> [Talaaq: 3]

3- Being continuous regarding the prayers, especially Fajr prayer.
Allaah Ta’ala said:
<< Guard strictly the five obligatory prayers especially the middle prayer>>         [Baqarah: 238]
In the Saheeh of Muslim on the authority of Jundub bin Sufyaan -RadhiAllaahu anhu – who said that the Messenger of Allaah – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said: ‘Whoever prays the Morning Prayer; then he is under the protection of Allaah, so watch, O son of Aadam, so that nothing can take you away from Allaah’s protection.’

4- Reading Sooratul-Baqarah in your home:
The Messenger – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said: ‘Do not make your homes like graves.  Indeed the Shaytaan flees from the house in which Sooratul-Baqarah is read.’
He – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – also said: ‘Read Sooratul-Baqarah, since taking it is blessed and leaving it is grief and the Batlah (magicians) cannot read it.’
Muawiyah  said: ‘It has reached me that the Batlah are the magicians.’

5- Reading Ayaatul-Kursi after every obligatory prayer after the legislated ‘Adhkaar (supplications) which follow giving the sallam in prayer.   What indicates this is the saying of the Messenger – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam: ‘Whoever reads Ayaatul-Kursi at the end of every obligatory prayer; nothing will prevent him from entering Paradise except death.’

6- Reciting Ayaatul-Kursi when going to sleep.  This is what Bukhari narrated with an incomplete chain on the authority of Abu Huraira -RadhiAllaahu anhu – who said: The Messenger of Allaah appointed me to look after the Zakat of Ramadan, so someone came to me to take some food….’ then he mentioned the hadeeth and in it: Shaytaan said: ‘When you go to your bed then recite Ayaatul-Kursi, indeed it will be protection from Allaah for you and the Shaytaan will not be able to come close to you until the morning!’  Abu Huraira let him go and in the morning he informed the Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – of what he had said: The Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said: He spoke the truth even though he is a liar.’

7- Reading the last two Ayaat of Sooratul-Baqarah: What is narrated by Bukhari and Muslim on the authority Abu Mas’ood al-Ansaari -RadhiAllaahu anhu – who said the Messenger of Allaah – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said: ‘Whoever reads the last two Ayaat from the end of Sooratul-Baqarah at night then they will be sufficient for him.’

8- Reading the last three Soorah of the Qur’aan in the morning and evening:
What has narrated by Abdullaah bin Khubbayb -RadhiAllaahu anhu – who said: ‘We went out on a very dark rainy night seeking the Messenger of Allaah – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – for him to lead us in prayer.’
The Messenger of Allaah – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said: ‘Say.’
But I did not say anything.
Then he – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said:
<< Say: He is Allaah, the One>> [Soorah Ikhlaas] and the last two Soorahs three times when you reach the evening and the morning, they will be sufficient for you against everything.’

9- Reading the last three Soorah of the Qur’aan after every prayer:
What has been narrated by ‘Uqbah bin ‘Aamir -RadhiAllaahu anhu – who said: ‘The Messenger of Allaah – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – commanded me to read the last three Soorah of the Qur’aan after every prayer.’

10- A Muslim should say:
‘In the name of Allaah with Whose Name nothing whatsoever on this earth or in the heavens is harmed and He is The All Hearing and All Knowing.’
Bismil-lahil-lathee la yadhurru ma’a ‘issmihi shay’un fil ‘ardhi wa la fissama’i wa huwa ‘as-samee’ul –‘aleem
Three times in the morning and evening.

11- Seeking much refuge in Allaah with: ‘The perfect Words of Allaah from the evil of what He has created’ in the night and the day, when stopping to rest in a building, a desert, in the sky or sea, due to the saying of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-:
‘Whoever stops at a place on his journey and then says: –
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ I seek refuge in the perfect Words of Allaah from the evil of what He has created – A’outhu bikalimatil-lahi ‘at-taammati min sharri ma khalaqa
nothing will harm him until he leaves that place.’

12- To eat seven Ajwa dates from al-Madinah in the morning, due to the saying of the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-:
‘Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning, neither poison nor magic will harm him on that day.’
Or he can eat seven dates from the land of al-Madinah due to what Imaam Muslim narrated on the authority of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- who said: ‘Whoever eats seven dates from the land of al-Madinah in the morning then poison will not harm him until the evening.’
The great scholar Ibn Baz held the opinion that it is hoped that this protection is also for the one who eats seven of any type of date even if they are not from the dates of al-Madinah.

13- Purifying your home from pictures and statues due to what is narrated by Muslim on the authority of Abu Huraira -RadhiAllaahu anhu – who said that the Messenger of Allaah – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said: ‘Angels do not enter a house where there are statues or pictures.’

So the presence of pictures and statues in a house prevents the Angels from entering that home and a home that the Angels do not enter is easily entered by the Shayateen (devils).
This fortification is not just specific to magic rather it is for repelling evil in general, and from the evil that it repels is magic.

14-From this fortification is saying: ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shayin qadeer’
‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, to Him belongs the Dominion and for Him is all praise and He is capable of all things,’ one hundred times.
Indeed the one who says it, then it is a protection for him against Shaytaan during that day.

15- From this fortification is saying: ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyee wa yumeet wa huwa ala kulli shayin qadeer’ ‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, to Him belongs the Dominion and for Him is all praise, He gives life and He takes life and He is capable of all things.’
ten times after the Fajr and Maghrib prayers.  Indeed for the one who says this it will be protection for him against every disliked thing and a guard against Shaytaan.

 

All Praise belongs to Allaah, may His peace and blessings be upon our final Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those who follow his guidance.

Making Dua (Supplicating) While Reciting the Quran

The Questioner says: Indeed I recite the Quran alhamdulillah, and when I reach (the verses mentioning the) descriptions of the Believers, I make dua to Allah that He makes me from them.  And when I reach (the verses mentioning the) descriptions of the disbelievers and hypocrites1 and their ultimate abode, I seek refuge with Allah from being from them.  So after the dua, must I say the Basmalah2 again, or do I continue my recitation without doing that.  And is it permissible to stop the recitation to make dua?  Benefit us, (I ask that) Allah benefit you.

 

 

(Answer): This is permissible, the Prophet – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – did this.  So when he was in tahajjud at night – alayhis salaah was salaam – when he would come to a verse of warning (about a punishment), he would seek refuge with Allah (from the punishment). And when he came to a verse mentioning Allah’s Mercy, he would ask his Lord for His Mercy.  So there is no problem with this, rather it is recommended to do this in tahajjud (prayer) at night, or in (an extra) prayer during the day, or when reciting outside of salaah (prayer).  All of this is recommended.  And it is not obligatory for him to say the basmalah again or the ta’awudh (seeking refuge)3. Rather, you bring (say) the dua4 then  you begin the recitation (again) with no need to again say the basmalah or the ta’awudh.  All of this is when you are praying by yourself an extra (non obligatory) prayer.

 

As for when you are praying in the obligatory prayer, then it is not established from him – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – that he would do this in the obligatory prayers.  Likewise when you are praying behind the Imam, then indeed you listen to the Imam and you do not make dua with these duas when the Imam is reciting.  Rather, you listen (to the recitation for the) prayers prayed out loud5. As for those prayers not prayed aloud6, then you recite the Faatihah  and what is easy for you to recite along with that without using these duas that you use in the extra prayers.  Because the Messenger of Allah – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – didn’t do this in the obligatory prayers.  Perhaps the reason for that – and Allah knows best – is to make it easier upon the people and not prolong it for them.  Because if he made dua at every verse mentioning Allah’s Mercy and he sought refuge at every verse mentioning a threat (of punishment), then perhaps the salaah (prayer) would become very long and perhaps it would become a hardship upon the people.  So it is from Allah’s Mercy and His treating His servants well and His kindness to them that He didn’t legislate this for the obligatory prayers so that the recitation (of Quran) could be continuous and so as to not make the recitation too long for the people.  As for in the extra prayers, in tahajjud, in the night, in salaatud duhaa (forenoon prayer), or other than that from the extra prayers, then there is no harm in that and the affair regarding that is vast.

In the narration of Ahmad: ‘Then the Messenger supplicated for Umm Sulaym and her family.’ And the narrator mentions: ‘Anas mentioned that his eldest daughter Ameenah informed him that there were more than one hundred and twenty from his offspring buried when Hajjaj appeared.’ al-Albaani said: that this Isnad of three narrators is authentic upon the conditions of Bukhari & Muslim.’

Shaikh Saalih Aalush Shaikh on Asking the Dead for Dua

Q: Whoever asks the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) after his death that he prays (makes dua) for him (the asker) and seeks forgiveness for him  from Allah (God, The Creator), is this polytheism?

A: “Yes, it is major polytheism because the Prophet (alayhes-salatu was-salaam) is not called upon after his death.  So seeking dua (calling upon/invocation) from the dead, seeking dua for deliverance or rain, meaning, that he calls upon God to rescue him or he calls upon God to forgive him, or to give him something, etc, all of these things enter into the meaning of dua (calling upon/invocation).  And God, Lofty and Exalted is He, said (translated):

And the masjids are only for God, so don’t call upon anyone else along with God”1 (Quran 72:18)

And the one who says that this form – seeking dua – is not the seeking which is shirk (polytheism), then he has indeed nullified completely the foundation of monotheism in this respect.  For all types are seeking.  Seeking dua, meaning, seeking dua from the dead, seeking forgiveness from the dead, or seeking dua from the dead – that the dead person prays to God that He forgives, or seeking deliverance from the dead or help, etc., all of this is from the same angle, the angle of ‘seeking’. And ‘seeking’ is dua and this enters into (what is mentioned) in The Most High’s (God’s) statement (translated):

Whoever worships another god along with God has no proof for that2. Verily, his reckoning is with his Lord.  Indeed, He will never cause the disbelievers3 to be successful.” (23:117)

And in His statement (translated):

And the masjids are only for God, so don’t call upon anyone else along with God” (72:18)

  And in His statement (translated):

And those you call upon other than God do not own even a qitmeer (thin membrane over the date seed).” (35:13)

And verses similar to those.  So this differentiation (between praying to the dead and seeking the dead to pray for you) is contrary to the proof.  And whoever understood from the speech of some of our leading scholars a differentiation or that seeking dua from the dead is an innovation, then this doesn’t mean that it is not polytheism. Rather, it is the innovation which is (also) polytheism. 

Meaning, what the people of Pre-Islamic ignorance used to do. They would only seek to become closer to them by calling upon them (and this is disbelief and polytheism).  But seeking from the dead that they pray for you, this is an innovation which has no basis, not from the people of Pre-Islamic ignorance, nor from the Muslims.  So this was something newly invented which is without a doubt an innovation.  But it is an innovation that is polytheism and disbelief.

And its meaning is intercession.  What is the meaning of intercession  which is sought from other than Allah that is polytheism? Intercession is seeking dua.  Seeking dua from the dead is considered intercession (the impermissible intercession which is polytheism since the dead do not have the ability to intercede for the one asking).”

1 The Scholar at-Tabari said in explanation of this verse:

ا(وَأَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلا تَدْعُوا) أيها الناس ( مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا ) ولا تشركوا به فيها شيئا، ولكن أفردوا له التوحيد، وأخلصوا له العبادة.

 “’And the masjids are only for God, so don’t call upon’ O mankind ‘anyone else along with God’ and don’t worship anyone or anything with Him, rather single Him out with monotheism, and make all worship only for Him”

2   i.e. there is no command from God, The Creator, instructing people to worship others along with Him.  Rather, God instructs His creation (mankind and jinn) to be true monotheists.  He said in the Qur’an (translated): “And worship God (only) and don’t worship anyone or anything with Him” (4:36)
