The difference between khashyah and khawf

Shaikh Uthaymeen said as part of his tafseer for verse

وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ

(The saying of Musa to Fir’awn): “And that I may guide you to your Lord so that you have khashyah” (79:19)

Meaning that you fear Allaah – Mighty and Majestic is He – upon knowledge from you. Because because khashyah is fear (khawf) combined with knowledge.  Without knowledge it is just khawf.  The difference between them (i.e. between khashyah and khawf) is that khashyah is based upon knowledge.  Allaah, The Most High, said:

إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ

“From His servants it is only those who have knowledge who have khashyah of Allaah” (35:28)

And from Shaikh Uthaymeen’s tafseer of the verse:

ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِيَ رَبَّهُ

“That is (the reward) for the one who has khashyah of his Lord” (98:8)

…So Khashyah is more specific than khawf.  The difference between them will become clear with the following example: When you fear someone but you don’t know if they can overpower you or not, this is khawf.  But when you fear someone and you know that they can overpower you, then this is khashyah.

عائشةُ: هي أُمُّ المؤمنين زوج النبيِّ

صلى الله عليه وسلم

وبنتُ أبي بكرٍ الصديقِ رضي اللهُ عنهما

وهي أفقَهُ النساءِ مطلقًا

وأفضلُ أزواجِ النبيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ما عَدَا خَديجةَ

ففي تفضِيلِهَا عليها خلافٌ

توفيت سنة 57 ه

Aishah: She is the Mother of the Believers and the wife of the Prophet

Sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam

And the daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq – (we ask that) Allaah be pleased with them both

She is the most knowledgeable (with the best understanding) of the women (in the religion) with no exception

She was the best of the wives of the Prophet – sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam – except for Khadijah

And some of the scholars differ over which of them is better

She died in the year 57 after the Hijrah

Advice Regarding the Way to Seek Knowledge (p.17-19)

…I direct some advice to everyone who hears it from us at this time – and you who are listening – regarding the subject of being eager to present the Mashaayikh, the teachers, and the speakers.  In reality, something which is not good has appeared among our sons (the Muslims): every one wants to say: “I brought the Shaikh to my masjid” not caring whether this (shaikh) is qualified so that knowledge can be taken from him or whether he is not qualified and knowledge is not taken from him.  All that is important (to this person) is that he brought a Shaikh.  Who is this Shaikh?  After that, look and you will find the most amazing of things.  He (the Shaikh) is either from the well-known people of innovation and desires that this person (who brought him) was ignorant of (him being from them).  So how many people have desired good but have not achieved it – as Umar – (we ask that) Allaah, the Most High, be pleased with him – said.

 

So he is ignorant of him (being from the people of innovation and desires) and he brings him to the people and perhaps he causes them to become attached to him. Then after that an attachment is formed between him and them so he leads the astray and he (the one who ignorantly brought this person to the people) is the cause of this.  And perhaps he will bring a Hizbee whom he is also ignorant of his condition so he falls into this calamity and causes others to fall into it.  And more amazing than that is that you see our sons in these times, after the ax has fallen into the head and cleaved it in two, he comes and asks (about the condition of this person).  So he is like the one who ends his recitation (of Quran) and then says: “I seek refuge with Allaah from the cursed shaytaan. In the name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.” after he has ended his recitation.  After he has brought him (to the people) he asks about him.  This is not correct.  The affair is the opposite.  If you were wise, you would ask before you acted.  Because this is what Allaah has instructed us:

 

So know (O Muhammad – sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam) that Lâ ilâha ill-Allâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women.”1 (47:19)

 

So He began with knowledge before statements and actions. So you must ask (about a person’s condition) before you act (by taking knowledge from them or directing the people to them).  Why is it that after you have brought him, you say: “What is his condition?”  This is not correct. So when the likes of this happen, and when deviation amongst the people happens due to this one you have brought while you didn’t know him (his state) – for the people are under your care.  So it is obligatory for you to  investigate (an individual before you put him in front of the people to teach) as our salaf used to investigate (them) in the time of good at the beginning of this ummah.

 

  The era of (Imaam) Maalik and those with him (from the scholars).  They would investigate (them).  So perhaps we can say that today is the era of widespread tribulations (fitan), of much turning about of the people, and of their changing (for the worse). What is obligatory upon us is that we have even more concern (for investigation of individuals). This affair – and I say this because it has spread in these times – that our brothers have begun to bring those who are not qualified (to teach) then they ask us about them. And they may bring to us some of the statements of these people which would make the small students of knowledge laugh.  That is because these people in reality are not qualified to have people studying under them….’

Ask the People of Knowledge if you don’t know – Imaam as-Sa’dee

Imaam as-Sa’dee said in his explanation of verse:

 

 

فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُوْنَ

So ask the People of Knowledge if you do not know.” (16:43)


{ وعموم هذه الآية، فيها مدح أهل العلم، وأن أعلى أنواعه، العلم بكتاب الله المنزل. فإن الله أمر من لا يعلم، بالرجوع إليهم، في جميع الحوادث، وفي ضمنه، تعديل لأهل العلم، وتزكية لهم، حيث أمر بسؤالهم}

 

And the generality of this verse contains praise for the People of Knowledge. And that the highest category of it (knowledge) is knowledge of the revealed Book of Allaah. For indeed Allaah commanded the one who doesn’t know to return to them (the People of Knowledge) in every situation. And contained in it is praise for the People of Knowledge and tazkiyyah (purification/recommendation) for them, because He commanded that they be asked.”

 

 

Imaam as-Sa’dee also said in explanation of verse (21:7):

 

 

فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُوْنَ

So ask the People of Knowledge if you do not know.”

{وهذه الآية وإن كان سببها خاصا بالسؤال عن حالة

الرسل المتقدمين من أهل الذكر وهم أهل العلم,فإنها عامة في كل مسألة من مسائل الدين أصوله وفروعه,إذا لم يكن عند الإنسان علم منها,أن يسأل من يعلمها,ففيه الأمر بالتعلم والسؤال لأهل العلم,ولم يأمر بسؤالهم إلا لأنهم يجب عليهم التعليم والإجابة عما علموه}

 

 

This verse, even though the reason for it was specifically to ask about the case of the previous Messengers from the People of the Reminder – and they are the People of Knowledge, then indeed it is general for every matter from the matters of the religion – its foundations and its branches – when a person doesn’t have knowledge about it, he asks the one who knows it. So in this is the command to learn from and ask the People of Knowledge. And He didn’t command that they be asked except because it is obligatory upon them to teach and answer with what they know”

This is an advise from Shaykh Bazmool, found on the site http://www.sahab.net concerning the person that is not able to reach the scholars in person.

How to seek knowledge if you can’t reach the people of Knowledge

Shaykh Ahmad bin Umar Bazmool

Question: What does a person who wants to seek knowledge do if he is not able to reach the people of knowledge? Do they suffice with taking knowledge from books, and what is the methodology of doing so in this case?

The Shaykh repeated the question and asked:

Is the person an Arabic speaker or a non Arabic speaker?

The questioner responds that he is as Arabic speaker.

The Shaykh answers:

As for seeking knowledge, the origin is that the Muslim travels to the scholars to gain knowledge from them if he does not have a scholar in his locality. What is befitting for him is to travel to the scholars if he is able. All praise is for Allah (Aza wa Jel), during our present time means of communicating with the scholars have become widespread. (It has become easy for us to communicate with) the scholars who are upon the straight methodology and safe aqeedah, but we will lay (mention) some easy affairs for the one seeking knowledge in our present time so that a person can seek knowledge while he is in the confines of his home.

This is done in the following ways:

1. If he is able to call a scholar (one upon the Sunnah) if he has the financial means, him and a group of his friends can attend a class with the scholar. This is a means of seeking knowledge.

2. Another way which is also easy it that an individual for example travels to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah and during his visit, he buys tapes of the people of knowledge that are well known for their correct beliefs and methodology. (A person) can also request someone else who is traveling to buy these tapes for them. Thereafter the individual listens to these audio recordings, he listens to the speech of the people of knowledge. It is, by the permission of Allah, as if he is in front of the scholar.

3. If an individual is able to be consistent with the classes on the radio, for example the classes of Shaykh Saleh al Fawzan or other than him (may Allah preserve him) from the scholars that are well known who’s classes are broadcasted on the Quraan radio station (KSA). It is upon the individual to be consistent with this program. This is very good, but at the same time, I warn of some stations that have lessons with individuals whose affairs are not known or those who are known to have deviated from the salafi methodology. Verily, one does not take knowledge from these stations for indeed those individuals that are unknown or have deviated from the correct path and the salafi methodology; one does not take knowledge from them. This is because knowledge is from the religion, so let everyone look to who he takes his knowledge from. (Unclear sentence) Verily if you seek knowledge from a person of innovation or a man that you do not know his religion, you do not know if is methodology is safe or unsafe. And the methodology (of an individual) is known by either being widespread or asking the salafi scholars. You say to them: We have an individual so and so, do you know this person? If they reply: We know him to have the correct methodology and belief. Then one can take from him, but if they say, we don’t know him then you should continue to ask until you find out about him.

4. By way of internet, for indeed there are (paltalk) rooms for Shaykh Zayd al Madkhali, Shaykh Ahmad an Najmee and Shaykh Rabee al Madkhali and other than them from the salafi scholars. There are also rooms for some salafi students of knowledge, classes that an individual can go on the internet and enter these rooms and schedule classes for himself. I also warn from intensive lessons from some directions that it is not known who is teaching. An individual says: I take the lesson and I just continue upon my way! I warn you of this. I warn you from taking lessons from rooms that either have individuals who are unknown or they are known for incorrect beliefs. Do not be deceived because an individual teaches in such and such university or such and such institute etc… verily these titles: (BA, MA, PhD) do not benefit and do not satisfy ones hunger. The respect of an individual is the praise of the salafi scholars for them, and their knowledge of them. A person merely being a doctor and the likes, an individual may in fact be a revolutionist. So be aware and do not be deceived by his degree (unclear words) I am informing you of sources for seeking knowledge but there might be some sort of danger in some of them, so I have to warn you from this danger.

Other means of seeking knowledge similar to what was mentioned by the questioner, such as reading books.

But in reading books there are also things one should be cautious of:

1. If a person does not have knowledge, he can misunderstand something

2. He may incorrectly pronounce words

3. He may read from whoever comes and goes and the affair becomes confusing to him. He reads from the people of Ahlus Sunnah and he, for example reads from the people of innovation, and he does not distinguish between the two. But on the other hand, if he knows the arabic language, he understands the speech and he has sat with the people of knowledge and he has some foundations for example; the foundations that by the permission of Allah, he is able to continue reading, writing and researching, then this is ok.

But he should be aware of the following matters:

1. He should refer to the speech of the scholars, not depend on his own understanding

2. He must be diligent and read the books of the people of sunnah, those known with the correct methodology and belief only!

3. When he is able to reach the Ulamaa, it is upon him to do so. To go to them, to refer back to them, to ask them.

4. His reading of books is done so out of need he does not make this his means of seeking legislated knowledge, rather, he takes if from the mouths of the scholars just as the salaf took it from the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salam) and his students and those who came after took it from the salaf. This is (the way) knowledge (should be sought). If a person merely takes it from books, and reads from those who are not known, then a person may deviate. Verily knowledge is obtained by seeking it and having a relationship (with the people of knowledge). The purpose of seeking knowledge is not merely to have abundant amounts of information; verily there are affairs that are related to knowledge, such as its manners and understanding. It is because of this, ignorance and mistakes have increased for the individual who has made reading books a habit instead of sitting with the scholars.

These are some means of seeking knowledge that I advise myself and the questioner with. Allah knows best, and may the peace and blessing of Allah be upon the Messenger Muhammad, his family and his companions.

Shaykh Dr. Ahmad Bazmool, may Allah protect him, said:

I would like to alert my salafee brothers in every place about a dangerous issue. The issue is as follows: It’s them being fooled by everyone who begins to teach, and thinking that he is qualified enough to take knowledge from.

So, if they see that he’s a person who writes on salafee websites, they think he’s Salafee;

If they see that he has books, they think he’s Salafee;

If they see that he gives sermons, uses complex speech, and uses eloquent phrases, they think he’s Salafee;

If they see that he gathers the youth and encourages them to memorize at-taweed, al-Usool ath-Thalaathah, and that he teaches them these types of affairs, they think he’s Salafee;

If they see that he is a teacher at a university, they think he’s Salafee;

If they see that he teaches in the Prophet’s Masjid or the Haram in Makkah, they think he’s Salafee;

If they see that he’s a judge, they think he’s Salafee;

If they see him delivering lecturers, or appearing in the media, they think he’s Salafee;

All of these things are not sufficient, in reality, to the people of knowledge in order to establish the Salafiyyah of this man and that he is qualified to teach and to benefit his brothers.

All of these affairs don’t benefit him at all. Rather, these affairs are what we find those who stay away from and distance themselves from the sittings of the Salafee scholars using as a means to fool the general people into thinking they are Salafiyoon.

Fine. So what’s the path [we take]?

The way to know if knowledge should or shouldn’t be taken from a person is known by one of two ways:

The first: The scholars recommend and explicitly state: ‘So and So is Salafee and a student of knowledge; benefit from him.’

And I want to bring attention to a situation: If a Shaykh says: ‘So and So is Salafee,’ that doesn’t mean that he is qualified to teach. The Shaykh must mention two things: that he is Salafee and that he is qualified to teach.

We have seen some people fool the general people by saying a Shaykh has said that So and So is Salafee. Fine. Did he say he’s a scholar? Did he say he’s a student of knowledge?

Being Salafee is a level, and being a student of knowledge or a scholar is a higher level coupled with Salafiyyah. So, it is not befitting for us to be fooled by these types of situations.

Likewise [we shouldn’t be fooled] just because a person goes to Shaykh Rabee’s classes, or that he was in Shaykh Rabee’s house, or things similar to this that people are fooled by.

So, the first thing is that a scholar explicitly expresses a recommendation stating that he is upon the Salafee Manhaj and that he has knowledge;

The second way to know is that his state is well known to the scholars and students of knowledge, and that he has well known salafee stances. Likewise, the scholars generally praise him, aid him and help him.

This proves that he is from those who have been teaching and the scholars know about it and have remained silent about him; rather, they have spoken well of him and aided him. This proves, if Allah wills, that he is adhering to the truth.

As for other than these two things that we have mentioned, then beware beware. May Allah bless you. Don’t be fooled, Don’t be fooled by those who have internet forums or by some who possess some of the characteristics that the general people are fooled by.

I say, and I repeat: Those who have internet forums and some of those who have been put to trial may possibly use as a means the mention of Shaykh Rabee’, Shaykh ‘Ubayd,  Shaykh Muqbil al-Waadi’ee, may Allah have mercy on him, Shaykh an-Najmee, Shaykh Bin Baaz and Shaykh al-‘Uthaymeen so that they can lure in the general people; so after they lure them in, they inject the poison into them. (1)

For this reason, I also view that we should ask about these websites, should we visit them or not? Have they been recommended or not? This is because they are spreading a portion of knowledge, so either it is beneficial knowledge or harmful … (2)

(1): [TN]: We find this on platforms such as twitter. A person may follow Bin Baaz, al-‘Uthaymeen, al-Luhaydaan, al-Fawzaan, etc. However, the reality is that their actions contradict their claim to following the methodology of these great scholars.

Examples of contradiction are a lack of giving sincere advice by warning against falsehood they fully recognize, ambiguous stances against those who implement the methodology of the Muslim Brotherhood, their views about Shaykh Rabee’, etc.

Some Advice in Seeking Knowledge – Shaikh Ahmad Bazmool

…As for the first matter, and it is that a person thinks that this knowledge is heavy and that he doesn’t understand it

Then this is an error

This is an error

Knowledge is easy

Knowledge is easy

And We have indeed made the Qur’ân easy to understand and remember, then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?”1(Al-Qamar 54:17)

And the Prophet – (we ask that) Allah raise his rank and grant him peace – said:

I was sent with Haneefiyyah ‘samhah’”

And ‘samhah’ means: easy, clear

So there is nothing in the deen which is difficult or hard

Then what is the problem?

The problem could be in your choosing the wrong level of studies

Meaning: you may need to study some of these issues before attending the likes of these big lessons

Because knowledge, as Az-Zuhree said – is “Awdiyah”2

Whoever desires it

Whoever seeks it all at once

It leaves him all at once

And as some of the Salaf said:

Knowledge is like a ladder

You must climb it step by step3

If you want to climb it all the way to the top (without being ready), you’ll fall

So you must go in levels (step by step)

So then there is nothing heavy regarding knowledge, nor difficult

Additionally you must take care to learn the knowledge you need from the Quran and Sunnah

Specifically the matters of aqeedah and the matters of worship

Specifically the matters of beliefs and the matters of worship

These are matters which are easy and clear, with the Permission of Allah, Lofty and Exalted is He

Meaning, a person may want to study in the beginning, for example, some of the higher Islamic sciences

So he considers knowledge to be hard – and without a doubt this is a mistake

Rather, learn the Quran and the Sunnah with their proper understanding. Because they are, with the Permission of Allah – Lofty and Exalted is He – two beneficial matters for you

Additionally from what is important in learning:

Choosing a teacher who is good at teaching

Additionally from what is important is that you – O Seeker of Knowledge – give importance to this knowledge

You prepare before attending (class)

You concentrate in class

You review after class

What happens (nowadays)?

What happens is that the Seeker of Knowledge doesn’t prepare

And maybe he comes (to class) without his book

When he attends, he is turning right and left

When he leaves, he doesn’t review what he learned and heard

Not even at least to review the matn (text)

And the next time, he says, “I don’t understand”

No, the problem is not that you don’t understand

The problem is that you are negligent in seeking knowledge

And in the way you seek knowledge

For indeed the Salaf and the People of Knowledge, from what has been mentioned in their biographies, prepared for the lesson before attending.

On top of that, they memorized the text which they were studying before the lesson

Then when they attended, they concentrated and busied themselves with listening to the lesson

Then when they left, they reviewed and made firm what they had studied and learned

So knowledge, its life-blood is review

And knowledge is built upon memorization and understanding

Whoever Allah combines for him memorization and understanding of the knowledge

Then indeed Allah, Lofty and Exalted is He, has opened for him a door in knowledge

So here it becomes clear to us why some people consider it (knowledge) heavy

And why some of them say, “I don’t understand”

The problem is not in the knowledge

The deficiency is within ourselves

The deficiency is within ourselves….

 

…And that one knows that time is from gold

Rather, by Allah, it is more valuable than gold…

 

…And know – (we ask that) Allah bless you – and this is an important matter – that the intention behind seeking knowledge is to act upon it

And the intention behind seeking knowledge is to get closer to Allah – Exalted and Lofty is He

And to worship Allah upon baseerah (insight)

The intention behind seeking knowledge is not to gather a lot of information

This is an opening for Shaitaan which is very dangerous for the students of knowledge

So you find one of them taking an interest in knowledge: for knowledge

So the goal of seeking knowledge is made to be: knowledge

And knowledge isn’t like that

The praiseworthy knowledge isn’t like that

Rather, knowledge is a light which Allah – Lofty and Exalted is He – puts in the heart of the Seeker of Truth

A light which Allah – Lofty and Exalted is He – puts in the heart of the Seeker of Truth

And this light is built upon knowledge, sincerity (ikhlaas) and following (the sunnah)

And it is not just a light without knowledge or action

But seeking the pleasure of Allah – Lofty and Exalted is He

And seeking to please Allah – Lofty and Exalted is He

And seeking knowledge to act upon it

This is the success for the servant from Allah – Lofty and Exalted is He

As for seeking knowledge only for knowledge

Then this is an opening for Shaytaan

Diverting the Seeker of Knowledge from acting (upon his knowledge)

And this opens upon him an opening

So he doesn’t improve in action

And from the most evil results of this type of thinking

I mean the type of thinking of the one who considers (seeking) knowledge to be only for knowledge

Is that he even seeks knowledge from an innovator

Even from an innovator

Because he looks at the knowledge and doesn’t look at the deen

Who is the one Ahlus Sunnah would exalt?

Ahlus Sunnah would exalt the Follower of the Truth, even if his knowledge was little

And they would have a low opinion of the Opposer to the Truth, even if his knowledge was great

And they didn’t exalt him due to his knowledge

And they didn’t exalt him due to his knowledge

…When you see a man loving the person of innovation

And loving the innovator

And he knows his condition4

Then he is with them

Like what has been reported from some of the Salaf

That a man was asked about

So it was said: “We don’t know him”

Someone said: “Who are his companions?”

They said: “The Qadariyyah”

He said: “Then he is Qadari like them”

So a person is put along with his close companion…

 

…Whoever loves a person of the Sunnah – it is a proof for his (being upon the) Sunnah

Likewise whoever loves the person of innovation while he knows about him (that he is on innovation) – it is a proof for his (being upon) innovation

Whoever Removes a Hardship from a Believer…

Abu Huraira – radiallahu anhu – narrated that the Prophet Muhammad – sallallahu alayhe wa sallam – said:

مَنْ نَفَّسَ عَنْ مُؤْمِنٍ كُرْبَةٍ مِنْ كُرَبِ الدُّنْيَا

Whoever removes from a Believer a hardship from the hardships of this life (the dunya),


نَفَّسَ اللهُ عَنْهُ كُرْبَةٍ مِنْ كُرَبِ يَوْمِ القِيَامَة

Allah (God) will remove from him a hardship from the hardships of the Day of Judgment

 

وَ مَنْ يَسَّرَ عَلَى مُعْسَرٍ يَسَّرَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا والآخِرَة

And whoever makes a difficult affair easy, Allah will make things easy for him in this life and the Hereafter

 

وَمَنْ سَتَرَ مُسْلِمًا سَتَرَهُ اللهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا والآخِرَة

And whoever covers a Muslim, Allah will cover him in this life and the Hereafter


وَاللهُ فِي عَوْنِ العَبْدِ مَا كَانَ العَبْدُ فِي عَوْنِ أَخِيْهِ

And Allah comes to the help of His servant as long as (or as much as) the servant comes to the help of his brother

 

وَمَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيْقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيْهِ عِلْمًا

And whoever treads a path seeking (Islamic) knowledge

 

سَهَّلَ اللهُ لَهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى الجَنَّة

Allah will make easy for him by way of it a path to Paradise

 

وَمَا اجْتَمَعَ قَوْمٌ فِي بَيْتٍ مِنْ بُيُوْتِ اللهِ

And a group of people don’t gather in one of the houses of Allah

 

يَتْلُوْنَ كِتَابَ اللهِ

Reciting the Book of Allah

 

وَيَتَدَارَسُوْنَهُ بَيْنَهُمْ

And studying it amongst themselves

 

إِلَّا نَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِم السَّكِيْنَةُ

Except that tranquility descends upon them

 

وَغَشِيَتْهُم الرَّحْمَة

And mercy covers them

 

وحَفَّتْهُم المَلَأئِكَة

And the angels surround them

 

وذَكَرَهُم اللهُ فِيْمَنْ عِنْدَهُ

And Allah mentions them to those with Him

 

ومَنْ بَطَّأَ بِهِ عَمَلُهُ

And whoever is slowed down by his deeds

 

لَمْ يُسْرِعْ بِهِ نَسَبُهُ

His lineage won’t speed him up
