What to say to protect from the evil eye – Shaikh Maahir al Qahtaani

September 27, 2012

This is translated from: http://www.ajurry.com/vb/showthread.php?p=73947 from Shaikh Maahir al Qahtaani’s answer to a question  (2nd question) (an excerpt from his answer)

. And I have not been able to, up until this very moment, find a proof in this matter showing the correctness of saying ‘maa shaa Allah’ to defend against the evil eye. Rather, what should be said is, ‘Allahumma baarik lahu’ or ‘(Allahumma baarik) alaihee’ or ‘(Allahummah baarik) feehee’1

That is because the hadeeth of Anas and its text, ‘When one of you sees from his brother something that pleases him, so he says, “Maa shaa Allah, laa quwwata illa billah’ the evil eye will not hurt him.’ is weak.  Because in its chain is Abu Bakr al Hadhalee – who is matrook (left/abandoned) and Hujjaaj bin Naseer who is severely weak….

As for His, The Most High’s, statement (translated):

It was better for you to say, when you entered your garden: ‘That which Allâh wills (will come to pass)! There is no power but with Allâh ‘.”2 (18:39)

Then this does not have any connection to repelling the evil eye, because it is a conversation between a Believer and a disbeliever.  So indeed the disbeliever said, ‘And I don’t think the hour will ever come.’ (18:36)  So he disbelieved in his conversation with the Believer.

So how could it be appropriate for the Believer to call him to repelling the evil eye but leave off calling him to Islam after his falling into disbelief?

Thus his (the Believer’s) statement, ‘ It was better for you to say, when you entered your garden…’ meaning: believing that what Allah wills will happen, and whatever He does not will, will not happen.  So he called him to Imaan…

(footnotes)

1 Which is asking Allah to bless it, based on the hadeeth:

When one of you sees from his brother something he likes, then let him supplicate for blessings for him”

narrated by Abu Umaamah, declared Saheeh by Shaikh Albanee in Saheeh al Jaamee 4020

Repeatedly Looking at the One Proposed to

August 16, 2012

Taken from: http://www.al-sunan.org/vb/showthread.php?2425-ÓÄÇá-áØáÈ-ÇáÎíÑ&langid=8

Question:

(After the Islamic Greeting):

Shaikh Maahir – sometimes I sit with the one I am engaged to with her mahrams present in a manner allowed in the legislation of Islam. However, I am afflicted with something from desire when looking at her so I must lower my gaze to the ground.  So is this the prohibited adultery of the eye?  Or is it ok because she is my fiance (i.e. I am engaged to her)?  What should I do?

Answer (Shaikh Maahir al Qahtaani):

When they have not yet married, it is not permissible for him to repeatedly look at her with desire because this is the adultery of the eye and he is disobedient to Allah Who said (translated) ‘And say to the Believing men to lower their gaze…’ (24:30).  And the only thing permitted is the legislated look to fulfill the need of knowing the description of the female who is proposed to, not taking pleasure in repeatedly looking at her or making numerous visits to her because that is haraam.  He must seek Allah’s forgiveness for that if he falls into it.  As for when he has married her, then she is his wife and it is allowed for him to consumate the marriage with her which is better than just looking at her with desire.

And in this fatwa from alifta.com:

But do not look at her repeatedly after you know her description

and shape and do not be alone with her for fear that something

may happen between you, the consequences of which

are not praiseworthy”

The Ruling on Carrying a Weapon and the Intention When Defending Oneself

( the Questioner says): Allah bless you…I asked you previously about the ruling of defending oneself in the situation of your resisting a burglary or transgression against you in the house…But is there a difference between the niyyah (intention) being to remove or expel him (the transgressor) from the house and between the niyyah being to kill him?…

(The questioner continues): Here my question is: Is it also permissible for a person to carry something with him in his car to defend himself with (…if there is some transgression against him before theft) whether he (the transgressor) wants to steal the car, his wealth, or other than that..Because we hear a lot about people stopping someone in his car by force late at night. And they beat him and steal from him what he has of wealth. They also take his car from him and they do not find a trace of them (later).

So is it permissible to carry something for defending oneself (only) not for transgressing against others?

Answer (Shaikh Maahir al Qahtaani) : In the beginning, his intention is to defend himself with the least amount of force necessary, not to kill him. But if there is no way to defend himself except by killing him, then he kills him to save himself from being killed or fought against and robbed. He (the transgressor) is known to the Scholars as the attacker.

And there is no harm in him carrying a weapon with him to defend himself as there comes (in a narration) from Ibn Umar that he picked up the weapon when the thief entered his house. So the weapon was with him in the house so that he could benefit from it. And Allah knows best.

Question: Assalamu alaikum Noble Shaikh.  One of the sisters asks what is the ruling on women learning Quran from a male Shaikh?  And is it permissible to participate in Quran competitions knowing that the judges will be men and they must recite in front of them?  And if it is permissible, then what are the limitations?

Answer (Shaikh Maahir al Qahtaani): In the Name of God, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

It is not permissible – as Shaikh Albaanee clarified – for a woman to recite Qur’an with tajweed to men because in the elongation (of the vowel sounds) and in the beautification of it (when recited) is fitnah (trial) and softening of speech for the men.  Allah, The Most High, said (translated),

O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allâh), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.  And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance, and perform As-Salât (IqamâtasSalât), and give Zakât and obey Allâh and His Messenger. Allâh wishes only to remove ArRijs (evil deeds and sins, etc.) from you, O members of the family (of the Prophet SAW), and to purify you with a thorough purification.’ (33:32-33)1

And Bukhari narrated in his Saheeh, from Usaamah bin Zaid – Allah be pleased with them – from the Prophet – sallallahu alayhe alayhe wa sallam – that he said (translated),‘I haven’t left anything after me that is a more harmful trial for the men than the women.’2

And it is necessary for them in competitions to recite the Qur’an with tajweed, elongation (of the vowels), and with beautification of the recitation.

As for when they recite plainly from behind a barrier  for the purpose of correction of grammatical errors without elongation or beautification, or if she recites with tajweed to a very old man who has no desire, then there is no harm in that.

Q: Noble Shaikh, what is the ruling of the greeting which is used by those who do Karate or Tae Kwon Do which is when the participant leans his head towards the instructor giving a slight bow?

A: (Shaikh Maahir Qahtaani) This type of greeting is not permissible. And submission/humility is only to Allah – free is He from all imperfections – Who gave everything its nature and guided it. So this is not our – the People of Islam – greeting – with the head. Rather, our greeting is with the salaam. And indeed the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said: ‘Whoever resembles a people then he is one of them.’

And indeed the Scholars have prohibited us from that in this question posed to the Permanent Committee (this fatwa)

The third question from the fatawa numbered 5313:

Q3: We joined one of the Karate clubs in America and the instructor said: ‘You must bow when someone bows to you.’ So we refused and explained to him that (not bowing to other than Allah) is from our religion. He agreed but said, ‘That we must only bow our heads, because he is starting with the bow, so you must return his greeting. So what do you think about that?

A3: It is not permissible to bow as a greeting to a Muslim or a Non-Muslim, not with the upper part of the body, nor with the head. Because bowing is a greeting of worship. And worship is only for Allah Alone.

And with Allah is the success
